Uprising star John Boyega got fans worried in August when he seemed to say that the series had ret-conned the end of Pacific Rim and that Raleigh had actually died, but it appeared to have been a slip-up. In-universe, however, Raleigh’s absence is totally unexplained and unremarked upon. Her husband left one day never to return and her parents had disowned her some. By my count, Pacific Rim has two female characters: Mako Mori, and the Russian female Jaeger pilot who has approximately one line and is never seen independent of her male piloting partner. Due to the conflict, the studio allowed Hunnam to get out of his contract. Asian Woman, Asian Girl, Mako Mori, Rinko Kikuchi, Hollywood, Pacific Rim. The real-world explanation for his absence is that the actor behind the character, Charlie Hunnam, has already committed to another film, Papillion. ![]() Raleigh, the other hero of the first movie who saved the world alongside Mako, is completely missing in Pacific Rim Uprising. Gamora comes closest to fulfilling the Mako Mori criteria, but when she is fridged, her arc's conclusion serves as a defining moment for thanos, her killer.
